“The Global Metaphysics of Abstract Painters / Performance”, is a group exhibition featuring: Nanette Carter, Gregory Coates, Jacquelyn Flowers, Sherman Fleming, Lamerol A. Gatewood and Michael D. Marshall.
Lamerol A. Gatewood and Michael D. Marshall, Co-Curators

The title of the exhibit was chosen because we believe it accurately describes each artists’ exploration of painting. Metaphysics is the branch of philosophy that deals with the concept of being. This includes abstract concepts such as knowing, cause, identity, time, and space. We are all postmodern, abstract expressionist painters / performance. We are connected by the medium we use to create art; oil or acrylic paint and other material elements that push our visual vocabulary forward in a postmodern, global America. Each artist explores painting in non-traditional ways including shredding canvas into strips, deconstructing paintings on paper, and applying paint to different surfaces like metal, rubber, and egg shells.

Our ideas and thoughts range from social to political, exploring such topics as war, genocide, sexism, racial profiling discrimination, and xenophobia. Regardless of the topic of exploration, what is consistent with each artist, though, is our esthetic sensitivity to the application of material to create abstract art. The application of color in all our art work is the metaphysics that synthesizes the art into a universal language.
